I attended a meeting today which was sponsored by some of our local state legislators.  There was a slick 14-page pamphlet on Depleted Uranium that was passed out by Cindy Evans.  It was done by the Army Installation Management Command – Pacific Region.  I spoke to Cindy about what's happening with regard to Depleted Uranium.  She said the deadline for getting air testing outside of military areas is this week.  She said that the military and the Dept. of Health have been  working hard to convince our legislators that they (military and DOH) are taking care of everything.

 

I asked if our legislators haven't learned that citizens have a grave distrust of the military and DOH.  I said that if an independent study isn't done there will be a backlash.  She said that there haven't been many letters sent in.

 

I asked if she felt that having folks write letters would make a difference at this point in time.  She said she feels this issue can be kept alive if she can get letters sent to her by Monday night.  I believe things are happening on Wednesday, so this will give her all day Tuesday to use the letters.

 

Please look at the following and write to Cindy.  If necessary, you can cut & paste either one, but it would be better to put the ideas in your own words.  Remember the backlash that occurred when HSF proponents e-mailed the same letter that they got from the HSF website; legislators were not happy.

Short version:

 

Please pass legislation that will require 24-hour air sampling by both the military and an independent organization such as Malu `Aina Center For Non-violent Education & Action or Dr. Lorrin Pang.  These samples must also be taken from areas outside of military installations; especially in areas of prevailing winds.

 

 

Long version:

 

Please pass legislation requiring 24-hour air sampling for Depleted Uranium.

 

I agree with having air sampling stations which will determine the levels of DU in the air.  However, these stations must not be limited to military bases.  We need sampling stations outside of military areas; especially in areas of prevailing winds.

 

In addition, in order to gain the trust of the citizens of Hawaii, all monitoring stations must be given joint custody.  This means that all stations will be locked and samples will only be taken when a representative from both the military and/or Dept. of Health AND an independent representative from an organization such as Malu `Aina Center For Non-violent Education & Action are present.  Cost for the analysis of the samples taken will be borne by the military and/or the State.
