TO: Kea`au Community and Interested Parties

SUBJECT: Invitation to Attend an Informational Meeting -

Presentations and Discussion on Investigations and Activities Related to Arsenic in Soils of the Kea`au and East Hawai`i Area

January 30, 2008 (Wednesday), 6:00-8:00 PM

Kea`au Community Center

You are invited to a presentation of information regarding arsenic in soils of the Kea`au and East Hawai`i areas. The Department of Health and partners such as the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa and at Hilo have been conducting investigations including:

Testing or screening of soils at some sites in the Kea`au and East Hawai`i areas for arsenic levels,

Testing of vegetables and fruits from gardens with elevated soil arsenic,

Urine arsenic testing of individuals living on/near soils with elevated soil arsenic,

Testing of soils to estimate what proportion of the arsenic may be biologically available if it were inadvertently ingested,

Estimating exposure risks and potential health risks associated with the elevated soil arsenic,

Examining options for reducing and/or eliminating elevated soil arsenic (remediation methods), and

Providing guidance to environmental consultants and community members on areas that need testing, sampling methods, and interpretation of testing data for soil arsenic.
