Fw: Malu `Aina rsponds to UHH ban of photos at CIA recruiting lecture
May 15, 2007 comments in response to April 20, 2007 letter from Keith Miser, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs regarding the UHH banning photography, and threatening removal of photographers at a publicly announced CIA recruiting lecture at UHH on March 8, 2007
Miser states his position: "In the future, every speaker invited by the Career Center to give an informational presentation for students will be asked if photography is allowed. If they do make a request that photography not be allowed, we will indicate this in the advertising for the event and will post the restriction outside of the door."
Malu `Aina response:
1. Miser's position is a clever ploy that attempts to erode civil liberties. Malu Aina rejects his position.
2. Miser has it backwards. He is not working for a private company. He is working for a public university. The University should be telling all job recruiters that the events need to be totally open (like other universities have done) since the University is a taxpayer run institution and taxpayers are paying the bills for the facilities. If CIA and other recruiters don't want their faces to be photographed at UHH they can put a bag over their heads. If they want a private event, they can rent a room at a local hotel and issue invitations.

Dear Dr. Tseng:
I write to protest the CIA recruiting lecture photo blackout at UH-Hilo on Thursday, March 8, 2007 in UCB Room 111 as a violation of citizens' Constitutional free-speech rights. I request that you investigate this matter fully and promptly.
The CIA recruiter, identified as clandestine operative, Joe Dorsey, said he didn't want his photo taken. If that's the case he shouldn't be giving a public recruiting lecture at a public university. Former Marine Norman S. Stahl, Director, Career Services, called in security to the lecture to enforce the photo ban. Hawaii Tribune-Herald staff photographer, William Ing, was told by Stahl that he would be bodily ejected by security if he took even one photo. A number of other citizens, including myself, that had still and video cameras to record the event were denied our right to take photos. Malu Aina peace organization also intended to take still photos and video of the presentation.
