Subject: support resolution 639-08
Aloha Council members:
I just received word that my older brother died suddenly this morning of a heart attack. I will be traveling to Pennslvania for his funeral and will not be able to attend the Wed. July 2nd hearing to speak in support of resolution 639-08 concerning military radiation pollution at Pohakuloa.
I urge you to support resolution 639-08 without amendment to deleting the heart of the matter -- a call to stop all live fire at PTA. It is important that all live-fire be halted immediately.
A thorough independent assessment and clean up of the contamination needs to be completed. Any live-fire and other activity that creates dust risks spreading the radiation contamination which is likely to be far more extensive than the Army is currently admitting. The Army has only admitted to the use of one kind of radioactive weapon used at Pohakuloa -- the Davy Crockett. Many others have likely been used there as well. The biggest danger is not external radiation exposure but of inhaling radioactive alpha particles which can be carried long distances by the high winds that move through the Pohakuloa area. One breath of such particles may lead to cancer and other health problems. The Army and the Dept. of Health are misleading the public in this matter by saying their measurements are within normal range for external radiation exposure.
The Council needs to act on the precautionary principle to protect the health and safety of the people and aina of Hawaii county for present and future generations. Please do not be cave in to military pressure. This resolution is in the best interest of our land and people and even the troops sent to Pohakuloa for training.
Stand firm. Support Resolution 639-08.
Mahalo.
