Breaking the Silence!

A call to end the USA led war and occupation of Iraq!

Today is Good Friday in the Christian calendar, the day Jesus was executed by the Roman Empire for the charge of sedition -- stirring up the people.

This Holy Week marked the 5th anniversary of the U.S. war on Iraq. That's 5 years too many! The silence of our churches in not condemning the invasion and ongoing occupation of Iraq by the U.S. is deafening. Where are the voices of conscience in our local churches today? And where is the courage of conviction to stand up and be counted in non-violent action against this war and the acts of terror and atrocities committed against the Iraqi people in our names?

The Cost of this War, in both lives and money, is staggering.

Approximately 1,193,163 people - men, women, and children - have been killed in the violence in Iraq. Of the total deaths, 3,990 are U.S. military personnel. The remainder 1 million plus deaths are, Iraqis - killed in their own country. War is also expensive in dollars as well as lives. The U.S. monetary cost of the war on Iraq so far is: $503,588,835,461, or more than 500 Billion dollars. That will cost us, the citizens of Hilo, 43 million dollars. (, - war_home)

Every dollar spent on militarization and warfare is stolen from the the health and welfare of the American people. War funding leaves our schools and universities bankrupt, our healthcare system broken and unaffordable, and the vital infrastructure of our country neglected and decaying.

Each death, each horrid injury, and every life ripped apart by devastation and loss is a sin that we, as a nation and individuals, must account for. Our sin, if not active war mongering, is silence. It is the deadly silence that has protected the evils of discrimination, injustice, and warfare throughout history.

Good Friday is a good time to break the silence

and be stirred into action!
