STOP THE SPREAD OF RADIATION
ON HAWAII ISLAND!Where are the voices of Hawaii's elected officials --county, state and federal? Why the silence in the face of confirmed radiation contamination in the center of our island at the Pohakuloa Military Training Area (PTA)? Major planned military live-fire exercises scheduled for February 2008 and ongoing monthly B-2 bombing missions risk spreading the radiation contamination at PTA. Why are none of our elected officials and government employees charged specifically with protecting the public health speaking out to stop the spread of radiation on Hawaii Island?
On August 20, 2007, the Army confirmed the presence of radiation contamination on Hawaii island from weapons training. The radiation confirmation came after years of the military denying its presence. Citizen groups kept the pressure on the military and began doing their own radiation monitoring. Here's what we know. Spotting rounds containing DU radiation for the Davy Crockett nuclear weapon system were used at the Pohakuloa Training Area in the 1960s. (Other weapon systems containing radiation may have also been used.) On Tuesday, May 29, 2007, a citizen radiation monitor recorded elevated radiation readings at Mauna Kea State Park adjacent to the military's Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA). The wind on 5/29 blew directly off the live-fire training areas at PTA and dust devils of suspended topsoil were visible in the air. The elevated radiation readings spiked as high as 75 counts per minute when normal background is 5-20 counts per minute.
The full extent of contamination is not known. Complete surveys have yet to be made. High tech 24/7 air monitors with a paper trail and citizen computer access to the data at all times have not been set up around the base to detect wind blown radiation particles moving off the base. (The cost of such monitors is peanuts compared to the $2 billion the U.S. military spends PER DAY! waging war and spreading opala like they're doing at PTA.) Soil samples taken have not yet been analyzed. No testing of military or civilians who may have been exposed to the radiation has been done. No public balanced informational meetings have been held. The military has mislead the public by downplaying the health hazards of the depleted uranium (DU) radiation. In short, military operations continue "business as usual" and no one in public office is speaking out to stop the potential spread of the radiation contamination.
It is the inhalation of small DU oxide alpha particles that is of greatest concern, not external exposure. Small DU particles can be carried long distances by the wind and possibly spread by military live-fire exercises. It is time we start operating on the precautionary principle. We all have a duty to take action to prevent harm to human health and the environment. If our government officials will not speak out, then we the citizens must speak out to demand government action.
It's time to end the silence!
