Subject: Update on Hawaii DU and report on meeting with Sen. Roz Baker and follow up

RE: UPDATE ON DEPLETED URANIUM IN HAWAII DEVELOPMENTS:

"The Hawaii public health data also supports my findings. The two highest cancer rates in Hawaii are downwind from Pohakaloa including the entire southern half of Hawaii Island and downwind/downcurrent from Pearl Harbor including Honolulu, Waikiki, and Diamondhead to
the tip of Oahu. This is from the chronic exposure to emissions from nuclear powered carriers and nuclear submarines plus years of accumulating radioactive pollution at Pearl Harbor from Naval activities." Visiting California scientist Leuren Moret

MAUI PEACE ACTION'S MEETING WITH ROZ BAKER May 8: -

Community members, including several from Maui Peace Action, met with Sen. Roz Baker on May 8 in Kihei, at which time we questioned her about why HB1452 didn't come out of conference committee to be funded.

She that she "wasn't aware" before the funding meeting was over that it didn't come up, so she claims no responsibility for it. After we raised many questions and Lance Holter showed the gathered group the KITV interview on DVD in which scientist Leuren Moret holds up her tube monitor with the high radiation readings and Dr. Pang speaks in support of state testing there (see it in YouTube link below) , and after nearly every one of the 20-odd people gathered there raised their hands to say they were already aware of the health danger of DU, she allowed as how HB1452 was the bill she was the most sorry about that it didn't make it this spring's session.

When asked why Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) on the Big Island was taken out of the bill, (and we had heard that Baker insisted to Big Isle Sen. Lorraine Inouye that it be taken out so that that she, Baker, would support the bill), Baker claimed that Inouye herself insisted that it be taken out due to state lack of authority over PTA (testing at Schofield would also be on military "property").

Following this discussion, Buck Joiner asked Baker to write a letter to the director of the Dept. of Health Noise and Radiation Section, Russell Takata, to insist on testing at, around and downwind of all military firing ranges in Hawaii. Sen. Baker agreed and asked Lance Holter to draft it.

As a follow up, Dr. Pang, Lance Holter, I and others sent certified mail letters to Russell Takata requesting testing at Pohakuloa and other military firing ranges, and he has agreed to run a series of tests. He told a Big Island resident that he was not going to just test one time but set up a regimen. Big Islanders are buying their own monitors and will videotape their readings with witnesses, in case the state testing is inadequate and to verify findings.

Rep. Jon Mizuno, one of the introducers or co-signers of HB1452, writes that he will call a legislative support meeting and a press conference in January 2008 to revive the bill and give it traction for next spring's legislative session.

Now we need to see what the state DH will do about testing the very real danger (see KITV text or YouTube link at bottom) of radiation at PTA, on Oahu, and what about Kaho'olawe? There are many rumors of signs warning of radiation danger over there for the clean up crews, and speculation that the Navy was testing DU weapons there at least in the late '80's, if not earlier.

Read the text, below, of KITV news with Dick Alguire Sunday night April 29 in an interview with Maui's Dr. Lorrin Pang, DH Maui Officer, and with DU researcher Leuren Moret on the Big Island about the high levels of DU they found April 21 testing with a geiger counter downwind of Pohakuloa Traning Are, Saddle Road, Big Island:

Some activists are claiming the U-S Army is firing depleted uranium on gunnery ranges in Hawaii ... and that it's contaminating the state with radioactive fallout.

[Anchor:DAN] {***DAN***}

The U-S Army denies using these types of rounds when it practices in Hawaii.

But as KITV 4's Dick Allgire reports... those raising the allegations claim they have proof.

Leuren Moret is a world renown expert on the subject of depleted uranium. She travels the globe giving presentations about the dangers of spreading nano particles of radioactive uranium through bombs and bullets.

IT'S NOT HARMLESS IT'S EXTREMELY TOXIC

On April 22nd she took geiger counter readings in South Kona on the Big Island.

NATS SOUND "57. IT'S GETTING HIGHER."

Normal background radiation would be 5 to 20 counts per minute. On this day she took readings of up to 93, which experts say is abnormal and quite high.

THAT IS HORRENDOUS AND IT COULD ONLY BECAUSE THEY WERE DOING LIVE FIRE WITH DEPLETED URANIUM AT POHAULOA WHILE WE WERE DOING THE MEASUREMENTS.

Leuren Moret claims the Army is using depleted uranium on the Pohakuloa firing range, and the wind is blowing it over South Kona.

The army insists is does not use depleted uranium in Hawaii. Dr. Lorrin Pang is a public health officialin Hawaii, but in this interview says he is speaking only as a concerned physician.

REGARDLESS OF WHAT IT'S FROM IT IS HIGH. IT HAS TO BE LOOKED AT. NEW FURTHERMORE SHE WENT AROUND THE TRAINING AREA AND I GUESS IT WAS HIGH DOWNWIND OF THE RANGE WHICH IS KIND OF LIKE A SMOKING GUN

ALL OF THE BOMBING AND GUNNERY RANGES ARE CONTAMINATED IN HAWAII WITH DEPLETED URANIUM ALREADY.

OUR May 3 DU LEGISLATION UPDATE, sent to entire Maui Peace Action

1. Here's what's happened to our DU (depleted uranium) testing bill, HB1452:

It passed out of all committees, all committee heads signed off on it and supported it, but it did not get brought up at the meeting for all bills that needed funding. Therefore, it could not move to the Gov. for a signature. (See top for Sen. Roz Baker's answer for why this happened, when she said she would support the bill and she is Chair of Ways and Means).

2. Here's what we can do next:

Technically, HB 1452 is alive and still sitting in the Conference Committee. We can get it passed NEXT YEAR without having to go through the Legislative process again, if we Maui supporters really work to let Senator Roz Baker know that we care about this and expect her to help. She had told Maui Democratic Party Chair Lance Holter this year that she would support the bill.

We may need to campaign Sen. Roz Baker in her own district, door-to-door and telephoning, with the message that Baker seems to be protecting the Military instead of us. See shocking information, shown on KITV news April 29, from a radiation monitor test on April 21 of Big Island air. (YouTube link above)
