Fw: re: Testing for Depleted Uranium

Aloha, Governor Lingle and other concerned parties :

I support bill HB1452 to get soil (and air) testing for depleted uranium oxides in and around military bases in Hawaii . Including on the Big Island.

New information is being released daily on the dangers of Depleted Uranium. Previous human exposure testing methods were flawed and the new tests are revealing exposures in veterans that were previously told their mysterious illnesses, including birth defects in their children.. were all in their head.

As our country is now a big business military industrial complex, and as most aspects of our government have been corrupted by the profit motive, we can not at the present time trust the information we receive from our own government, newspapers or TV.

Our Veterans have been sold out, our children have been sold out and we have been betrayed. The citizens of this country and this state, need to work to find out just what the truth is in every instance of our lives. This is the only way we can save America and Hawaii from the corruption that has insidiously infused almost every aspect of our lives.

We are guests here in this holy land of Hawaii, stewards to protect it.

In its Environmental Impact Statement, that "the entirety of Mauna Kea, whose southwestern slopes form part of PTA's base, is considered holy." Mauna Kea ( The White Mountain) is associated with Poli'ahu, the snow goddess of the summit, while Mauna Loa ( The Long Mountain ), last erupting as recently as 1984, is associated with Pele, the goddess of volcanic fires. The area between the two sacred mountains, considered to be a site of conflict between Poli'ahu and Pele, is called "Pohakuloa" ( The Veil that Covers the Spiritual Realm). Within the Pohakuloa Training Area there are seven stone shrines and a reported 291 archeological sites.

By the Army's own admission in the EIS, Pohakuloa is "spiritually and historically one of the most important places in Hawai'ian tradition and history...It is difficult to describe the emotional and spiritual link that exists between Native Hawai'ians and the natural setting. Hawai'ians generally believe that all things in nature have mana, or a certain spiritual power and life force. A custodial responsibility to preserve the natural setting is passed from generation to generation, and personal strength and spiritual well being are derived from this relationship. Because of this belief, Mauna Kea may be the most powerful and sacred natural formation in all Hawai'i...

We should not allow any Depleted Uranium on our Islands . Any equipment that has been used in battle has been exposed to the dust and should not be used here. And munitions made from DU should be banned world wide. Every square inch of our islands used by the military now and in the past, and those area surrounding them, should be tested and verified clean by independent lavatories.  DU dust has been shown to blow many miles from where it was used.

It was just revealed last year that DU was used in Hawaii as far back as 1960. This was previously denied for years.

Millions and millions are being spend across the country to clean up Depleted Uranium sites. People are starting to win large lawsuits against the polluters.

If allowed to continue to pollute in Hawaii, the state is opening itself in numerous ways to losing hundreds of millions of dollars through lawsuits,  health costs care costs and other means. Not to mention the cost in lives, jobs, time and suffering.... And the lost touristism revenue.

H.B. 1452 SD1 is a good first step in protecting Hawaii

God Bless

Depleted Uranium Dust - Public Health Disaster For The People Of Iraq and Afghanistan

By Douglas Westerman

05/01/06 " Vital Truths " -- - In 1979, depleted uranium (DU) particles escaped from the National Lead Industries factory near Albany, N.Y. ,which was manufacturing DU weapons for the U.S military. The particles traveled 26 miles and were discovered in a laboratory filter by Dr. Leonard Dietz, a nuclear physicist. This discovery led to a shut down of the factory in 1980, for releasing morethan 0.85 pounds of DU dust into the atmosphere every month, and involved a cleanup of contaminated properties costing over 100 million dollars.

Pohakuloa sits between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Even the Army acknowledges, in its Environmental Impact Statement, that "the entirety of Mauna Kea, whose southwestern slopes form part of PTA's base, is considered holy." It is almost a cliché to remind people that "all of us are connected." The fallout from DU and nuclear energy now binds us all together in an increasingly radioactive planet. No one is immune from the deleterious effects of radiation, and no one knows how to clean it up. What can we do about it? The only thing we can do is to stop the madness immediately.

We have met the perpetrators of the new radiation-induced "war on terror." And, sadly, it is us.

Depleted Uranium, Diabetes, Cancer And You

by Dr. Alan Cantwell

Recently, I received an intriguing email claiming that the rapidly increasing worldwide epidemic of diabetes was caused by depleted uranium (DU). As a medical doctor I never heard of such an idea. Every physician knows that radiation can lead to cancer, but the DU and diabetes connection seemed ludicrous. Nevertheless, I thought it would be interesting to check it out on the Internet.

Bill would recommend tests

By Bill Harlan, Journal staff

A bill to remind South Dakota veterans who served in certain combat zones that they can be tested for exposure to depleted uranium won a tentative recommendation from a House committee Wednesday.

Uranium is heavy, and depleted uranium (with the radioactive isotopes removed) is used in armor-piercing shells. Its health risks are subject to controversy.

Marion Fulk, a highly respected Manhattan Project and Livermore atomic scientist, says that depleted uranium "is perfect for killing lots of people." That, in fact, along with contamination of the land, is the purpose of the devices being tested.

There are efforts underway to oppose explosions of radioactive materials by the US government into the air in which we breathe. This article will outline various reasons why and how radioactive explosive "tests" are harming America - and describe the efforts of citizens in one area of the country who are now working to try to put a stop to them.

Italy : Uranium killing Italian troops

(SomaliNet) Italian soldiers are still dying following exposure to depleted uranium in the wars in Bosnia and Kosovo, their relatives say.

Troops who served during the wars in the 1990s believe they have contracted cancer and other serious illnesses from extended exposure to the munitions.

The US says it fired around 40,000 depleted uranium rounds during the Bosnian and Kosovo conflicts. A pressure group says 50 veterans have died and another 200 are seriously ill.
